Question
What do the noble scholars and the jurist of Islamic law say regarding the
following matter:
If a hafiz mistaken a verse for another verse and
forgets the verse he was reciting, hence paused for a while to recall the
verse, so in such case, what will be the ruling regarding Salah?
بِسْمِ اللہِ
الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ
اَلْجَوَابُ بِعَوْنِ الْمَلِکِ
الْوَھَّابِ اَللّٰھُمَّ ھِدَایَۃَ الْحَقِّ وَالصَّوَابِ
If a Hafiz pauses for the amount of time in which سبحان اللہ can be recited 3 times, in order to recall the verse
whilst reciting the Quran in Taraweeh Salah, then Sajda e sahw will become
Wajib [compulsory], so in such case, it will be necessary to perform 2 sajdas
of sahw at the end of salah, if they are not performed, then it will be wajib
to repeat the salah.
It is stated in nihayatul murad regarding jami’ al fatawa:
” لوفرغ من الفاتحہ و تفکر ساعۃ ساکتا ای سورۃ یقرء مقدار رکن یلزمہ السھو“
[Nihayatul Murad fi sharh hadyah ibn al ‘ammad, P714, Darul Bayrooni]
A’la Hazrat Imam e Ahl e Sunnat Imam Ahmed Raza Khan علیہ رحمۃ الرحمٰن states in Fatawa Razawiyyah: If he remained silent
for the amount of time in which سبحان اللہ can be recited 3 times, so in
such case, if the silence was for pondering about what to recite, then sajda e
sahw is wajib [compulsory] if he doesn’t [do sajda e sahw] then repeating the
salah is wajib and if the silence was deliberate for no reason, then too,
repeating the salah is wajib.[Fatawa Razaviyya, V-8, P.192, Raza Foundation,

Mufti Amjad ‘Ali Azami علیہ الرحمۃ states: At the time of Qirat
[reciting the Holy Quran] or at any other occasion, if a person paused for upto
one Rukn i.e. for the amount of time in which سبحان اللہ can be recited 3 times in order to ponder, then sajda
e sahw is wajib [compulsory].[Bahar e Shari’at, V-1, P.715, Maktabatul Madina,
