Question

What do the scholars say regarding working as an accountant in an insurance company?

Working as an accountant in an insurance company is not permissible.

Here is the detailed ruling in this regard; it is not allowed for a Muslim to take up a job that involves assisting in sinful actions. The conventional insurance system includes multiple aspects forbidden in Islamic law, such as interest and gambling. As the basic responsibilities of an accountant include recording and managing the company’s transactions, therefore, taking a job where one has to maintain records of interest, gambling, and similar transactions is not allowed.

   The Quran states:

Translation: And do not help each other in sin and transgression.(Part, 06, Surah Al-Ma'idah, Ayah 2.).

In Sahih Muslim, Hazrat Jabir (رضی اللہ عنہ) narrates a hadith regarding those are involved in writing interest:

Translation: The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) cursed the one who consumes interest, the one who pays it, the one who writes it down, and the one who witnesses it. He also said, “They are all equal.”(Sahih Muslim, Volume 3, Page 1219, Beirut edition)

Regarding employment that involves recording interest transactions, Fatawa Ridawiyya states:

Translation:  If a job involves the collection of interest, demanding interest, keeping records of it, or any other impermissible act, then it is forbidden. (Fatawa Ridawiyya, Volume 19, Page 522, Lahore edition)
