Question

What have Islamic scholars and Muftis ruled on the following query? My father’s first annual death anniversary and my mother-in-law’s second annual death anniversary are approaching in the same month. So, can I hold a ceremony for reciting Fatiha etc to convey reward and the annual death anniversary for both of them at the same time and at the same place?Questioner: Muhammed Rafeeq Raja (Nashtar Road, Bab-ul-Madinah Karachi)

Yes! You can hold the annual death anniversaries of your father and mother-in-law together, there is not any harm in this because this is a form of conveying reward (Isal-e-Sawab). A specific time or action is not fixed for it. Doing a good deed and conveying its reward to the deceased can be done at any time whenever you like without any restriction. However, it will not actually in real terms be the death anniversary of the one whose death anniversary is not on that date, but in common parlance if there is a slight discrepancy then referring to it with this terminology is fine. If the reward is conveyed by mentioning a few names together, then they all will receive the full reward.
